# About

The world's first community owned and managed arts platform by artist, for artists.

Our goal is to make generative art accessible and inclusive to all. Our product offerings are articulated around two distinctive categories: 'Blind' & 'Select'.

## Blind : The finest collections curated on merit

*Our unbiased review process remains one of our strongest USPs and is fundamental to our brand identity.*

*‘Blind’ continues the lineage of our previous curated offering and is positioned as our halo product. **A*** ***Blind collection represents any submission which has passed our blind curation process**. Our ambition is that all generative artists will aspire to achieve this accolade throughout their career.*

*The 'Blind' product provides:*

* *Transparent & efficient submission process.*&#x20;
* *Constructive & actionable feedback*&#x20;
* *Art selected on merit, not reputation*
* *Zero artist fees*
* *Competitive royalty structure*&#x20;
* *Broad exposure to established collectors & investors*

{% hint style="info" %}
**‘Blind’ collections are offered via public fair auctions**

*A fair auction is a price discovery mechanism in which the auction starts from an initial asking price which is lowered incrementally until it reaches the price level at which the total number of bids is equal to the collection size.*

*The final price for all bidders will be determined by the amount paid by the last bidder.*

*Unlike a Dutch auction, those that bid above the final price will be refunded the difference between their bid and the final price.*
{% endhint %}

## Select : Our artist in residency program <a href="#id-1413" id="id-1413"></a>

*‘Select’ represents our artist in residence program, and allows the studio to approach artists without compromising the integrity of our blind curation offering.*

*‘Select’ curation is undertaken by a small team from within gmDAO who have a deep understanding of the generative art scene. The curators identify talented artists who are pushing the boundaries of the field, including those whose work may not typically be submitted to the studio. '**Select' provides the studio with a broader scope for the forms of art we can consider.***

*The program provides the 'Select' artist with access to the studio’s resources, as well as mentorship and support from our development team. During the residency, the artist is encouraged to experiment and advance the limits of what is possible with art.*

*The goals of the program are to foster a vibrant and dynamic creative community around generative art, and to support artists in the development of their craft.*

{% hint style="info" %}
**‘Select’ collections will be made available exclusively to gmDAO members at a fixed price.**

*Before the official release of any 'Select' collection, gmDAO token holders are able to prepurchase/reserve 1 piece for each token they hold (delegated tokens are also supported). Please note that reserves are non-refundable & non-transferable. Reserves will be honoured indefinitely and will can be claimed once the collection goes live.*

**Opt-in reserves are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.**

# Curation process: 'Blind'

A fair & unbiased review process that selects art of the highest quality without compromise.

## Principles&#x20;

1. **Blind Curation —** Meaning, submissions are taken at face value and assessed for their artistic merit by a group of curators to reduce any potential bias associated with an artist or their past work.
2. **Fast and Thorough Feedback —** We differentiate ourselves by moving quickly through applications, and we offer clear and concise feedback to artists that are accepted or rejected.
3. **Push Artistic Limits —** As a launchpad, we should always be seeking out artists and art that are pushing the limits in the space.
4. **Clear Expectations and Feedback —** The curation panel sets clear expectations in regards to the timeline for the review process. Feedback is provided to submitting artists in a concise manner to submissions that make it to curation for both go and no-go submissions.

## Process

<figure><img src="/files/IYrz21i1AnL5JHDgNBLR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Submissions

Submissions are first screened by the curation lead for a subjective quality standard. Those submissions that do not meet basic quality standards will not make it to the curation team, and the artist receives a notification from the curation lead with the no-go decision. This is to ensure we are using the curation panel’s time efficiently. Submitters are also subject to a cool-down period at the curation panel’s discretion as we don’t want artists iterating and submitting repeatedly. The cooldown period is set to 3 weeks as a minimum.

Submissions are batch reviewed (up to a maximum of 3). Identifying information about the artist is stripped, leaving the inspiration for the work, outputs, and code. Threads are then created in the curation Discord to begin the review process per each submission. Curators should hold their initial feedback for 24 hours in a draft state within the thread before sending their comments in order for opinions to not influence other curators.

### **Review**

Temperature check via output review is done in each thread, with curation members providing their first thoughts and feedback in spoiler mode. Focusing on aesthetics, vision and evaluating the work relative to the gen art landscape and how it is pushing boundaries. \
\
Panellists are encouraged to allow 24 hours for each member to provide their initial feedback.&#x20;

After 24 hours, each panellist will review each others comments & transition into open discussion. \
\
During the open forum discussion, the panellists have the opportunity to defend their thoughts, insights, and critiques about the submission as well as challenge those of other panellists. They may discuss the artistic merit, relevance to the platform theme or concept, technical skill, and overall impact of the works. \
\
The open forum discussion allows for a deeper understanding of the submissions and their artistic qualities, as different perspectives and insights are shared. The process encourages open dialogue, critical thinking, and collaborative decision-making. It allows us to curate an exhibition that reflects the collective vision and expertise of all of the panellists.

###

### Voting

Votes will be conducted in an anonymous fashion over a 48 hour period.

Once a submission has been moved into the voting stage, the discussion threads will be locked & no further feedback can be provided.&#x20;

If a panellist believes they have identified the submission artist, they may still vote on the condition that they have no personal relationship or have not been in direct contact with the external artist. &#x20;

###

### Vote outcomes

* Option 1: Green light (accepted): A submission is voted 60% in favour and is accepted by the studio. A minimum of 10 vote participants is required.

*If the above is not achieved, the option below with the highest number of votes will be selected:*

* Option 2: Amber light: A submission is rejected, but is able to resubmit after a period of 4 weeks.&#x20;
* Option 3: Red light: A submission is rejected outright with no possibility of resubmission (artists may reapply with an entirely new body of work).&#x20;

###

### Resubmissions&#x20;

If a submission is invited to resubmit (i.e Option 2), a mandatory 4 week cooldown period is enforced.

Upon resubmission, the panel will only be able to choose between option 1 & 3 (accept or reject outright), where a minimum of 60% must be achieved for either outcome.&#x20;

In the result of a hung jury (votes that do not receive above 60% votes in favour or above 50% against), the curation lead will be invited to cast a deciding vote.

# Curation process: 'Select'

The curation process for the 'Select' program is a rigorous and collaborative effort, driven by the shared vision of gmDAO members. With a commitment to nurturing exceptional generative artists, this decentralized selection process aims to identify and support talents whose work will leave a lasting impact on the world of generative art.

1. Open Call for Submissions: The 'Select' program initiates an open call for submissions, encouraging generative artists from various backgrounds to showcase their portfolios and artistic statements.
2. Community Review: In the spirit of decentralization, a small committee of gmDAO volunteers collectively review and discuss the submitted applications. This collaborative process ensures that a diverse range of perspectives and expertise are taken into account when evaluating each artist's technical skills, creativity, and innovation.
3. Shortlisting Candidates: Based on the community's assessment, a shortlist of exceptional artists is compiled. These candidates are carefully chosen to represent a broad array of styles, experiences, and backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and diverse residency program.
4. Consensus-Based Selection: Leveraging the power of decentralization, gmDAO members reach a consensus on the final group of artists to be invited to the 'Select' program. These artists will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment of collaboration, learning, and growth, with access to cutting-edge resources and guidance from the gmDAO community.

Upon the successful completion of the residency, the selected artists will be invited to launch a collection on the innovative generative art platform, 'gm. studio'. This prestigious opportunity offers them a chance to showcase their work, gain exposure, and contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of generative art.

# Code

## Artist requirements

The gm.studio platform supports artwork code created in Processing (the java app) or Javascript (including p5js).

### Javascript

Artists should provide a script adhering to the following spec:

* A single minified js file.
* We recommend p5.js, but we can also support any non-WebGL based libraries.
* Your script should contain a standalone function that reads parameters from `window.params` and draws the artwork in a canvas in the current window.
* The window params type is described in the code block below.
* Your script should write the attributes to `window.metadata`
* Upon completion your script should set `document.complete = true`

```typescript
// window.params type
type ScriptParams = {
  seed: string; // a 0x prefixed 256bit seed for the artwork generation
  tokenId: number; // the id of the token in the collection
  res?: number; // the resolution of the render (width)
}
// this will be available on window.params
// for example, access the seed:
doRender(window.params.seed);
window.metadata = {
  palette: "Olive",
  size: "Huge",
  ...
};
...
// once rendering is finished
document.complete = true;
```

Notes:

* All metadata values should be output as `String` types.
* You should tell us the aspect ratio of the output so that we can display the pieces optimally in our gallery.
* The currently supported version of p5 is `1.4.0`

### Processing

Artists can also submit [Processing](https://processing.org/) code. In order for your script to inter-operate with GMStudio's rendering stack, you are required to include the following code:

```
// === GMStudio Arguments ===
String outDir;
String seed;
int tokenId;
int res;
// === GMStudio Arguments ===
void setup() {
    // Initialise GMStudio Arguments //
    outDir = args[0];
    seed = args[1];
    tokenId = int(args[2]);
    res = args[3];
    // ... artist's code here ... //
}
void exit() {
    // Save rendered image
    save(outDir + "/out.png");
    // Save traits to disk
    writeTraits();
    // let processing carry with it's regular exit routine
    super.exit();
}
// An example function for storing the NFT traits
void writeTraits() {
    JSONObject traits = new JSONObject();
    traits.setString("Palette", "Chrome");
    saveJSONObject(traits, outDir + "/metadata.json");
}
```

## Code archival

The official on-chain code repository for the gm.studio was deployed to [0x8229e9bc30cb02c2d9af25022bc146a302c48c47](https://etherscan.io/address/0x8229e9bc30cb02c2d9af25022bc146a302c48c47#readContract). This repository is used to store the code for all on-chain collections and acts as a central database thereof.

#### Storing in contract bytecode

*This step is usually performed by the studio team*

* generate a gzipped tarball of all files
  * `tar -czf archive.tar.gz sketch.min.js desc.json`
* get the blob's hex string e.g. by `echo "0x"$(hexdump archive.tar.gz -v -e '/1 "%02X"')`
* store blob using `repo.store(blob)`
  * an event containing the storage address will be emitted during the transaction

#### Code verification

Please make sure that the stored code matches the one used for rendering the tokens.

The code can be either fetched directly from the contract using the `repo.getBlob(collectionAddress)` or more conveniently using the tool under [gmstudio.art/repo](https://www.gmstudio.art/repo):

* Connect a wallet (needed to get a connection to the blockchain)
* Make sure to select the correct collection address
* Click `Download Blob` to download the code archive
* Unpack the archive

Please verify that the stored script is correct e.g. by rerendering the genesis token using the downloaded code.

You can fetch the seed for a given token directly from the collection contract on etherscan:

* Navigate to the collection contract, e.g. [0x65d8b2bf930a0015028efcaee5af7bf61b90b76f](https://etherscan.io/address/0x65d8b2bf930a0015028efcaee5af7bf61b90b76f#readContract)
* Fetch the seed using `contract.tokenSeed(tokenId)`

#### Code signature

If the stored code is correct, you can proceed to sign your code (this step is optional but we highly encourage to do so).

* Navigate to [gmstudio.art/repo](https://www.gmstudio.art/repo)
* Connect the wallet that you want to use to sign your code. The wallet will be associated with your code.
* Make sure to select the correct address of your collection. See also [contracts](https://docs.gmstudio.art/docs/contracts)
* Click `Sign`
* Metamask will pop up and prompt you to sign something - please do so.
  * Even though some of the characters might seem weird, this is totally fine because we are signing the raw binary hash of the repository entry while Metamask tries to interpret it as a string.
* Please communicate the output appearing below the buttons to the studio team.

```
# Permanence
Blockchain has afforded provenance and permanence to digital art and it has also granted us a new artistic medium. Just as ultramarine was a rare paint to source in the Renaissance, the knowledge of writing solidity code is a rare resource in today’s digital world. \
\
At gm. studio every collection has its code stored immutably on-chain, making each individual piece replicable entirely using on chain assets.\
\
When a piece is minted from one of our collections, the output is determined using a combination of the artist's algorithm and a unique hash, or seed, that is generated randomly upon the confirmation of the transaction on the blockchain. This ensures a sense of randomness & surprise to each collection, which often results in outputs that even the artist themselves did not expect. <br>
> ### What's an NFT? <a href="#what-are-nfts" id="what-are-nfts"></a>
>
> NFTs are tokens that we can use to represent ownership of unique items. They let us tokenise things like art, collectibles, even real estate. They can only have one official owner at a time and they're secured by the Ethereum blockchain – no one can modify the record of ownership or copy/paste a new NFT into existence.
>
> NFT stands for non-fungible token. Non-fungible is an economic term that you could use to describe things like your furniture, a song file, or your computer. These things are not interchangeable for other items because they have unique properties.
<br>
# Equality
Our belief is that art should be inclusive & accessible to all, which is why we implemented two practices into our ethos which we understand will allow for **equal opportunity for every applicant:**
1. A blind [curation process](/processes/curation)
2. Artists pay no fees upfront (the studio handles marketing, deployment & rendering costs)
We also believe that transparency is vital to gain the trust of both artists & community alike, and therefore wish to share our commission structure openly.&#x20;
For both our Blind & Select products, we take a 15% share of primary sale revenue & 2.5% of secondary sale royalties.\ <br>
# Climate
Our commitment to sustainable art
At the studio we are committed to creating art in a sustainable & responsible manner, which is why we have partnered with [KlimaDAO](https://www.klimadao.finance/) to offset our carbon emissions by 5 times.&#x20;
Our carbon emissions are calculated based off the energy generated from:
* Deploying smart contracts
* Minting the full collection
* Rendering the artworks
* Secondary sale transactions
We aim to perform carbon 'retirements', where carbon credits are redeemed on-chain, on a drop by drop basis. This allows us to make calculations after the majority of secondary sale volume has occurred.&#x20;
#### All Retirements via Klima can be found [<mark style="color:green;">**here**</mark>](https://www.klimadao.finance/retirements/0xD18e205b41eEe3D208D3B10445DB95Ff02ba4acA)<mark style="color:green;">**.**</mark>
## Primer on <mark style="color:green;">KLIMA</mark>
[KlimaDAO](https://www.klimadao.finance/) is a collective of environmentalists, developers and entrepreneurs who aim to pool their knowledge and expertise to drive change in the carbon markets, ***today***.
KlimaDAO is building an open-source, transparent community that will leverage the power of Web3 to deliver immediate and measurable climate-positive impact.
Klima incentivizes new supply of Tokenized Carbon Tonnes (TCT) on the blockchain through the KLIMA token. By driving demand into Tokenized Carbon, it incentivizes carbon offset producers to produce more carbon credits, assisting the adoption of new carbon mitigating or sequestering technology, and *disincentivizes **companies wanting to offset their carbon footprint with only C.Cs, and forces them to perform environmentally friendly actions.***
Klima is the first building block for unlocking the carbon economy — an economy where more economic activity leads to an acceleration in planetary regeneration rather than more damage to our planet. Before, monetary incentives and environmental incentives aren't typically aligned.
